Hazard and Risk Controls

Understanding Hazards and Risks

  • Hazard: Anything that can cause harm, like a wet floor or heavy boxes.
  • Risk: The chance that someone will be harmed by the hazard.

How to Control Hazards and Risks

1. Identify
  • Look for things that might cause harm.
  • Examples include slippery floors, moving machinery, or lifting heavy items.
2. Assess
  • Think about how likely it is that someone could get hurt and how serious it could be.
  • Decide which hazards need to be dealt with first.
3. Control
  • Find ways to eliminate or reduce the risk.
  • Use your workplace safety procedures to decide how.
  • Never leave a hazard unattended.
  • If you see something unsafe tell your supervisor straight away.
